Behind the Design
Fly Fishing is Hard...Especially for Beginners
Fly fishing comes with a steep learning curve!
Beginners are forced to jump in head first, often finding themselves swimming against the current; 1 stroke forward, 2 strokes back.
Many outdoor enthusiasts have entertained the thought of trying. However, they might not know anyone that fly fishes, and it’s unfamiliarity and complexities make them hesitant to give it a try.
These daring new anglers who’ve taken it up are quickly confronted with the adversities of the sport. Sadly many of them give up too early, not knowing what skills to learn or what they are doing wrong.
They quit not knowing that if they would have pushed a little harder and dug a little deeper, with a little guidance and direction, they would have soon found the success they desired.
Just like in most endeavors, the better you get at fly fishing, the more fun it is. And vice versa, the worse you are (everyone starts somewhere), the less fun it is.
Catching fish is fun. Losing flies in tree branches is not.
Many of the issues that novice fly fisherman face can be boiled down into two problems; The Equipment Problem and the Knowledge Problem.
If you’ve made the brave decision to pursue fly fishing, you must quickly make a big, vulnerable purchasing decision. Everything is uncharted territory for a newcomer like you. And you’re scared to death of making an expensive mistake.
Your mind starts racing with questions...
What equipment do I need? How much is it going to cost? Can I even afford to start? What if it’s too hard and I won’t even like it? Who can I ask or trust?
These are all too common of questions among those bold enough to give fly fishing a shot.
You’ll quickly seek the source of all answers and go on a Google spree. You might even visit a local fly shop or buy a book or two in search of solutions.
After sifting through myriads of online information and playing 20 questions with the local guide, you’ll be led to one of two options:
1. Buy a cheap starter pack
2. Buy an expensive “name brand” starter pack
Let us tell you in advance where each path leads (spoiler...it’s not a good one).
Option 1 leads to a false start! You’ve been penalized, not in yards, but in time and money.
One trip to the river and you’ll quickly find out that you're ill equipped for the adventures ahead. You don’t even have half the items you need?
The rod and plastic reel work (for now), but it’s as if you’ve purchased a knife when you’re headed to a gunfight. And I thought this was called “fly” fishing. Where are my flies?
If you’re an absolute beginner, with no guidance and direction going forward, you may not even know what you’re missing.
If you really want to get into the sport, you’ll need an immediate upgrade.
You know, deep down in the back of your head that it’s just an inevitable, ticking time bomb until each component comes raveling apart and breaks. You’ll be back where you were… with just a few hundred dollars less in the checking account.
If you decided to splurge on option 2, you’ll have to fork over a huge lump of cash. And this is all before you even know if you like the sport!
Soon you’ll come to the realization that most of your money went into the “name brand.” The rod is decent quality, a definite upgrade from the cheaper beginner sets you had your eye on; however, it’s nowhere near as nice as the most expensive rods these brands make.
You’re blown away by how much these “higher end” rods cost, and think that you’ll never be able to afford this equipment. Unless you’re willing to shovel 10 benjamins their way, you’ll have to sit back and be happy with what you got.
After putting this new package to the test, you’ll quickly be disappointed that you – again – don't have everything you need...even after spending hundreds of dollars!
You’ll need to spend even more time researching all the gizmos and gadgets essential to fly fishing success. Your jaw-drops when you learn how spendy the additional items you need are. Time to spend even more money!
“Maybe this fly fishing thing is just for rich people” you ask yourself. You’ve already burned a hole in your wallet, and it seems the further you keep going down this fly fishing hole, the more you have to keep spending. What sort of hobby is this and what have I gotten myself into?!
There is something about starting a new hobbie that's exhilarating. It’s a good thing too, because oftentimes it’s this beginner’s enthusiasm that helps you push through the pain of learning a new skill.
Everyone, and we mean everyone – under the sun – has a difficult time when they first start fly fishing. It comes with a steep learning curve! There are no naturals and everyone has to start somewhere. Great fly fishermen are made, not born.
Why is fly fishing so difficult?
It’s because you’re going up against an intelligent creature - The Fish.
Fish spend 24/7 (yes, they don’t even sleep!) doing one thing and one thing only - looking for food and eating it.
What if you had practiced a skill for that long? You would be pretty incredible at it, right? They can decipher the tiniest of details of what and what not to eat.
These beginner packages (as discussed in the equipment problem) leave their users high and dry without any resources for them to quickly learn and enjoy fly fishing.
Time to scour the internet and spend countless hours in search of YouTube videos, articles, blogs, and books.
At last – you’re ready to hit the ground running...or so you thought.
Just 5 minutes into your first watery adventure and you’re already overwhelmed...
How do I tie on these flies? How do I attach the leader to the fly line? How do I cast this long, whippy thing? Where on the river do I look for fish...are some places better than others? Everyone else around me is catching fish, what am I doing wrong? And if I get another fly stuck in this tree branch, I’m going to absolutely lose it!
You’re distressed, in the hole hundreds of dollars, and your beginners excitement is starting to wear off.
Time to go back into problem solving mode...cause you’re not ready to quit...you knew this was going to be hard.
You start to look into even more options. What about fly fishing school or hiring a guide?
You come to find out that fly fishing school would be the perfect fit...if you didn’t have to travel across the country to go to a school... and pay thousands of dollars to attend.
Maybe I’ll just hire a guide. They’re on the water everyday and I’m sure they would have a few tricks up their sleeves and lead me in the right direction.
After doing some digging, you come to find out that hiring a guide can cost $500 or more for just a day!
I guess I’ll just keep going down this DIY path. More YouTube, more books, more articles. I wish somebody would just tell me the most important things to work on.
There’s an endless amount of information out there. You wonder who you should listen to, watch, read, or trust when sifting through the information. Much of it is geared towards advanced anglers and covers sophisticated tactics.
I’m not trying to make it into the fly fishing hall of fame, I just want to be able to go out every once in a while and catch some fish...
Is that too much to ask for?
These steadfast individuals eventually become skilled anglers...but it often takes a year or two of persistence.
They’ll look back and realize that if they would have known what to work on, they could have shortcutted themselves to success. Their skills could far surpass where they are now.
Oh well, hindsite 20/20.

This will allow you to chuck heavy streamers and nymphs, while still being sensitive enough for delicate dry fly throws.
And each rod comes with an extra tip... just in case! A cordova case is also included for protection on the go.
Our 5/6 Ascent reel is CNC engraved, making it insanely durable and reliable. The drag was designed to provide you a wide range of give and take. You'll have the drag sensitivity you need when fighting that next Tyrannosaurus Rex sized fish!
Fly Selection A breeze
Fly Selection a Breeze
Fly selection is one of the most complex and challenging parts of fly fishing. There are thousands of fly patterns to choose from, limited resources to learn from, and can be especially difficult for anglers with little experience on the water.
A skilled angler knows how to “match the hatch.” This means they know how to put themselves in the right place, at the right time, with the right fly.
We’ve done the dirty work for you! We’ve painstakingly tested (in a number of conditions, locations, scenarios, and among several species) thousands of popular patterns. Through this rigorous process of elimination and meticulous selection, we were left with only the “tried-and-true”, “fish-favorite” patterns.
We’ve designed these packages with the absolute beginner fly fisherman in mind. It includes user-friendly reference cards that’ll help you smash through the learning curve of fly selection, even if you have no prior knowledge! Go to the river with confidence that you’ll be able to correctly identify the bugs around you and have the right fly to catch fish.

I recently just got into fly fishing and was looking for a good starter set. I shopped all around the internet and chose this one. These guys know what a beginner needs! Everything feels premium especially the fly rod. Good selection of flies. I found their beginner guide to be very helpful and even helped me catch fish my first time out. If you’re looking to get into fly fishing look no further.
I’m impressed by the quality of the equipment. It appeared to be expensive at first, but after realizing how much more stuff it came with and the grade of equipment you get, this is a steal. Gave me everything to get me started for a while. Great set, I highly recommend.
